LAILA TUL QADR _THE NIGHT OF POWER -IHTIKAAF

THE NIGHT OF POWER

Laielatul Qadr

Better than a thousand months

Laielat ul Qadr is a Mubaarak night. All nights of Ramadaan are Special nights but Laielat ul -Qadr is the holiest night of this most holy month. It is also the holiest night among all other holy nights throughout the entire year. Allaah Almighty granted huge power to this night.

It comes only once a year and Allaah Almighty grants to His most praised, most respected and most beloved Prophet Saiyyidinah Muhammad [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] this holy night, the Night of Power. About this night, Allaah Kareem, the Glorious and Exalted said:

In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful

Indeed We sent it [Al-Qur’aan] down on the Night of Power.

What will convey to you what the Night of Power is like!

Better is the Night of Power than a thousand months

in that Night the angels and the Spirit descend

by the permission of their Lord for every affair.

Peace it is, till the break of dawn.

[al-Qur’aan,]

A thousand months are equivalent to 83 years and 4 months. Fortunate is the person who spends this night in prayer. The last ten days of Ramadaan are a time of special spiritual power as everyone tries to come closer to Allaah Kareem through voluntary prayers devotions and good deeds.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] said:

Laielat ul Qadr has been bestowed by Allaah to my Ummah (People). It was not given to any people before this.”

[Dur-Mansoor]

Explanation of Soorah al-Qadr

Ibn `Abbaas, (Radi Allaahu-Anhu) amongst others, explains that the complete Qur’aan was sent down from Al-Lauh Al-Mahfooz (the Preserved Tablet) in the night of Al-Qadr to Bait Al-`Izzah (the House of Glory) in the lowest heaven, from whence it was revealed gradually to the Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] according to events which took place during his life over a period of twenty-three years. Then, Allaah Almighty says, in order to make clear the greatness of the matter of the night of Al-Qadar, which He has chosen for sending down of the Noble Qur’aan:

” Therein descend the angels and the Spirit ” That is, innumerable angels descend with uncounted blessings and mercy, as they descend when the Qur’aan is recited and they surround those sitting in circles in remembrance of Allaah and they lower their wings in the presence of the sincere seeker of knowledge in honour of him.

[Soorah An-Naaba’,]

Which Night is it?

The traditions indicate that Laiela tul Qadr is to be sought in one of the last ten nights and preferably in the last three odd nights. It was therefore the practice of the Holy Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] and his companions to make I’tikaaf in the Mosque for the whole time offering Divine service during the last ten days of Ramadaan.

Hazrat Aisha (Radi Allaahu-Anha) reported that the Messenger of Allaah Kareem [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] said

“Search for the Blessed Night in the odd (nights) from the last ten (nights) of Ramadaan”

[Bukhaari Shareef]

During the month, Muslims try to read as much of the Qur’aan as they can. Most try to read the whole book at least once. Some spend part of their day listening to the recitation of the Qur’aan in a mosque.

It is reported on the authority of Jaabir ibn `Abdullaah, (Radi Allaahu-Anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah Almighty
 [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]

said,

“Verily, I saw the night of Al-Qadr and then I was made to forget it, but it is (to be looked for) in the last ten nights, the night is clear and fine, neither hot nor cold as if there were a full moon and on this night, the devils do not go forth until the light of dawn.” Another sign is that at morn, the Sun rises without any radiant beams of light, appearing rather like the moon in it’s fullness. On that day, Allaah prohibits the “Shayaateen” from rising up with the Sun.”

[Narrated by Ibn Abi Haatim]

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah,(Radi Allaahu-Anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah Taa’laa [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]

said:

“It is the night of twenty-seventh or the twenty-ninth and verily, the angels on that night are innumerable.” Al-A`amash says, on the authority of Abu Lailaa that the verse means that the whole night is goodness, therein is no evil – until the appearance of the dawn.

May Allaah Taa’laa reward us with His bountiful blessings.
 Aameen.

Ihtikaaf
Ihtikaaf literally means to stay in place literally it signifies total seclusion from worldly dwelling. In the year of his departure from the world the Beloved Habeeb [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] observed Ihtikaaf during the last 20 days of Ramadaan.

[Durr-e-Mukhtaar]

During the time of Ihtikaaf, one is not allowed to do any worldly deeds besides what is absolutely necessary. He is, however, to take his food and drink within the Mosque. According to the four Imaams, Ihtikaaf should begin from Maghrib or sunset prayer and end after the Maghrib prayer.

Saiyyidaah Aaishaa (radi Allaahu anha) reported that when the Messenger of Allaah Kareem (sallal laahu alaiehi wasallam) intended to seclude himself, he said the Fajr prayer and then he entered into his place of seclusion.
