The Month of Mercy
The Holy Month of Ramadan
(Arabic: رمضان) is the ninth month
of Islamic calendar.
Observing Fast in the month of Ramadan is to follow
one of the five important pillars of Islaam.
Ramadan is a special month of the
year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for inner
reflection, patience devotion to Almighty Allaah [God], and self-control. Ramadan is
also a time of intensive worship, reading of the Qur’an, giving charity, sharing,
purifying one’s behavior, and doing good deeds.
Unlike any Ramadan, this Ramadan
is surely going to be different in many ways.
With the spread of Corona Virus
impacting millions of people worldwide, the holy month of Ramadan,
which is
scheduled to begin on or around Thursday/Friday 24 April, depending on Moon
sighting may look very different this year.
Muslims around the world will be strengthening
their relationship with Almighty Allaah.
Every day of the month, practicing
Muslims will also try to reconnect with their faith through acts of worship,
such as praying, reading the Quran and charitable giving, as well as
rekindling relationships with friends and family.
This year, curfews and
lock-downs imposed in some countries, as well as reduced opening hours, mean
that many Muslims will struggle to prepare for the month.
The corona virus pandemic
has forced thousands of schools to shut and millions of people to work from
home.
This could bring some relief to some of those who are fasting: the hours
usually spent travelling to and from work can instead be used to be catch up on
sleep lost during the late nights.
