DAY OF ASHURA/ASHOORA
The root word for Aashoora is Ashr meaning ten. There are a few reasons why this day is called Ashura
This is the tenth day of Muharram thus called AshuraApart from marking the beginning of Islaamic hijri year, Muharram also has a
special place for the muslim believers. It is called the “Month of
Allaah” (Shahru-llaah) and is one of the four sacred (haram)
months in Islaam. The 10th day of this month is called Ash-Shura
and was a celebrated day in the Jew and Christian communities during the time
of the Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet itself ordered muslims to fast on that day
as well as the day before to honour the day. It is believed that the day is the
day when Allah saved Prophet Moses from the Pharaoh.
Ten days are given superiority and this is the tenth day.
On this day, Allaah Almighty blessed ten Prophets with His chosen bounties.
Significant Incidents of the Day of Ashura
There are several prominent incidents which took place on the day of Ashurawhich have made their place in the glorious Islaamic history.
Here we list a few:
On this day Allaah Kareem, according to the meaning most suited to Him, descended on the Arsh.
It rained for the first time.
.Rahmaah [Mercy] was revealed for first time.
Hazrat Aadam [Alaiehis Salaam’s] repentance was accepted.
Allaah Almighty elevated Hazrat Idrees [Alaiehis Salaam’s] towards the heavens.
.Hazrat Nooh [Alaiehis Salaam’s] ark rested at the mountain of Joodi.
Hazrat Ibraheem [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was born.
Hazrat Ibraheem [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was made His ‘Khaleel’ by Allaah Kareem.
Hazrat Ibraheem [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was released safe from the fire of Namrood.
Hazrat Dawood [Alaiehis Salaam’s] repentance was accepted.
Hazrat Sulaiemaan [Alaiehis Salaam’s] recovered his kingdom.
Hazrat Ayoob [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was relieved of his illness.
Hazrat Moosa [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was born.
.Hazrat Moosa [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was victorious over the magicians.
Hazrat Moosa [Alaiehis Salaam’s] successfully crossed the river and Firaun [Pharaoh] was drowned.
Hazrat Yoonus [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was born.
Hazrat Yoonus [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was freed from the belly of the giant fish.
Hazrat Yaqoob [Alaiehis Salaam’s] regained his eyesight.
Hazrat Yoosuf [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was freed from the well and also from confinement.
Hazrat Ieesaa [Jesus] [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was born.
Hazrat Ieesa [Jesus] [Alaiehis Salaam’s] was raised to the skies.
The Holy Prophet [Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wassalam] was married to Ummul Mu’mineen Hazrat Khadijah tul Kubra

It was also during the month of Muharram that history had recorded the Martyrdom events of Karbalaa regarding Hazrat Imaam Husaien
[Radiyal Laahu Anhu]
Which had breathed new life into the spirit of Islaam regarding the values of Faith Ieemaan.

When the Holy Prophet
[Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wassalam]
saw the Jews fasting on the day ofAshura he enquired as to the reason for it and they replied that this was the day when as Prophet [Moses] Moosa [Alaiehis Salaam] was victorious over Firaun, [Pharaoh] who drowned along with his followers. So out of respect and as mark of celebration, we fast on this day.

narrates that

‘Whosoever revives the night before Ashura with his worship, Allaah will make him live as long as He wishes.’

Muslims the world over, in their remembrance of the Ahle-Baiet and
Hazrat Imaam Husaien
[Radi Allaahu anhum ajma’in),
engage themselves in feeding the poor in their memory as a mark of respect. On this occasion, it is imperative to reflect as to what aspect of the great Imaam’s life we Muslims are emulating to improve ourselves spiritually.
It is the love of the Ahle-Baiet and the Sahaba-e-Kiraam
[Ridwan ul laah ta’ala ajma’in]
that should produce the driving force in emulating closely in our lives the Sunnat of Prophet Muhammad
[Sallal Laahu Alaiehi Wasalam]
This alone in these times would not only provide the guiding light spiritually, but also be a source of great Barakaah and reward in this world and the Hereafter.
It is also of great Sawaab to have gathering reading the Quraan and read supplication Fatehaa in honoring and remembrance of the Ahle Baiet, [The Household of the Prophet]
Compassion Towards an Orphan
The Prophet also said…
‘Whosoever loves an orphan and attends to his needs.. Allaah Kareem will raise the status of that person in Jannah.
Fasting in Muharram
There are various ways to worship Allaah Almighty and each one brings us closer to the Mercy of Allaah Ta’aalaa and becomes a means of our sins being forgiven. Fasting on the day of Ashura is also one such kind of worship.
The Virtue of observing more Naafil fasts during Muharram.
It is very rewarding to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.
“Whoever fasts `Ashura’ it is as if he has fasted the entire year. And whoever gives charity this day it is like the charity of an entire year.”
