Why we celebrate Milaad Un Nabi – Milad/Mawlid?[Peace be upon Him]-by Aalimah Rubaab Anwar

Walaikumusalam,
The Question you asked is very common and a very good question too. About Meelad un Nabi [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam], this is a very huge topic but I’ll try to sum it up for you.

1. Before anything else you need to know what actually IS Meelad?

Meelad basically came from the Arabic word Mawlid which means birth. So Meelad means the Birth Celebration of the Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]

2. Now why do we celeberate the birth of The Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]?

Simple, because Allaah [ Subhanahu wa Taalaa] told us too. Allaah Almighty tells us to give thanks for the gifts he gives us. Allaah Kareem gave us every gift, but never once said that oh people i granted, bestowed, conferred on you. but when The Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] was sent to us Allaah Almighty said in the Quraan “Without any doubt Allaah conferred (definition of conferred – v. grant or to bestow) on the believers when he sent his Prophet in them.” (Surah Ale Imran Ayat 164). Now think and ask yourself why would celebrating the day the biggest gift was given to us be haram? Celebrating, giving thanks, showing signs of happiness, and we don’t just do it for a day we do it continuously, year around, 365 days, even the holidays. Every Moment we’re giving thanks to Allaah Kareem for The Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] .

How? By Meelad

3. Now why do some people say it’s haram, if it’s just giving thanks?

Some “people” have declared Meelad to be haram saying it’s an evil Bidd’at because they say that the celeberations of birthdays and anniversaries have no connection with Islaam, because this is what the kuffar do, and when we do meelad we’re promoting the customs of the kuffar. Muslims are also imitating the kuffar which The Prophet has strictly forbidden.

4. I bet you’re really confused now. It’s okay thats how most people are. But only a few ask, and you’re one of the lucky ones to ask.

5. Now to answer the questions some “people” pose.

a. celeberation of birthdays/anniversaries like kuffar in Islaam is not permissable?
yes
b. is Meelad promoting/imitating the customs of kuffar?
no
Yes, I know you’re probably thinking wait she just wrote that meelad is the birth celeberation of the Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] and now she’s saying no it’s not a birthday. Huh?

Think to yourself. What takes place at a Meelad celebration?

A few Naats (Poems in praise of The Prophet[Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]), Dars (speech), mostly people are fed, but most importantly an effort is made to fill people’s hearts wih the Love of The Prophet,[Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] to educate them of  His sunnah, His miracles, His character. Meelad is one of the best places for a person to learn about The Prophet. and learning about The Prophet, you learn about Allaah Kareem, because of course The Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] told us about Allaah Almighty.

Surah 19, Ayat 15 Allaah Almighty says about Hazrat Yahya “Mercy is on that day he was born”

Our Prophet Muhammad [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam] is better than all the the Nabis. Then how can it be that The Prophet’s birth date can be not of mercy and happiness.

Are we really imitating kuffar when we’re doing Meelad? Think Birthdays. What comes to mind? Cake, candles, happy birthday to you song. Now think of Meelad. What comes to mind? Naats, Zikar, Rasool ul laah, Allaah Kareem. Do you see a similarity? Birthdays are once a year, and Milads are every week. (yes, every week sometimes there are 5 in a week)

Milad is not just 12 Rabbiul Awwal, yes that day is the most important of all, because that day the Prophet[Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]was sent to us. the biggest gift given to us. But every Monday is a special day because that was the day The Prophet came in this world.

Every Night the time when the Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]came in this world,  Almighty Allah’s mercy comes down to the first sky (there are 7) and calls down to the people that Oh people ask me anything and i will grant it to you. What is this? This is Meelad

Hajj? and Namaz? what are these why do people travel so far just to go around a house made of bricks, wearing nothing but a simple white dressing, not cutting there nails? Why do they throw the pebbles? they’re all random, but why? in rememberance of The Prophet Ibrahim and Ismaeel [Alaihis Salaam]. and our Prophet is above them so why is remebering Him Haram?

Namaz/Salaah? Why do we read 2 rakat fard for fajar? 4 for zohar? 4 for Asar? 3 for maghrib? 4 for Isha? in rememberance of the Prophets. Prophet Adam [Alaihis Salaam] for fajar, Prophet Ibrahim [Alaihis Salaam] for Zuhar, Prophet Moosa [Alaihis Salaam] for Asar, Prophet Aiyyub [Alaihis Salaam] for maghrib, and Prophet Isaa [Alaihis Salaam] for Ishaa. And our Prophet is above all of them. So why is remembering Him Haram?

Meelad is a way of remembering our Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him], a way of learning about him.

How is this haram? Ask them what is Haram? Haraam is something that is proven from the Quraan. Quraan itself is a Naat of Our Prophet [Sallal Laahu ‘Alaiehi Wa Sallam]. Quran itself is Meelad e Mustafa.

Allaah Kareem Says ” Wara fa’na laka zikrak” Which means “we higher your praise.”

Allaah Kareem Says ” Wa Ma arsalnaka illla rahmatulilalameen” “We did not send you but mercy on all the worlds.”

Allaah Kareem Says ” Qad Jaa akum burhanum mir rabbikum wa anzalna ilaikum nooram mubeena” “without a doubt proof has arrived to you from your Lord, and we have sent you the open light”

Allaah  Kareem Says “Ya ayyuhan nabi inna arsalnaka shahidaunh wa mubashiraunh wa nazeera wa da’eeian ila Allahi biznihi wa sirajam muneera” ” Oh nabi we have sent you as a witness and to tell good news, to make people be scared of Allaah Almighty, and to call people towards Allaah Kareem with His order and we have sent you as a lightened candle, and a bright sun”

Allaah Kareem Says “Yaddullaha Fauqa aideehim” “Allaah’s Hand is over their hand” The thing to think here is Allah’s Hand? When the Prophet put his Hand on the Sahaba Allaah  Kareem said that is MY hand.

That is what Meelad is. “Innalllaha wa malaikatuhu yusalluna alan nabi, ya ayyuhal lazeena amanu sallu alaihi wasallimu tasleema” “without a doubt Allaah and His Angels send durood on His Nabi, Oh people that believe, send durood and send the best durood”

What is Allaah’s durood on His Prophet?

Quraan

What is our durood?

Meelad e Mustafa

I hope this answers your question, and that you’re satisfied. If you still have questions please ask, because this is only a fraction about milad.
